Daniel Boone Village in Hillsborough, North Carolina, was once a quirky, family-friendly roadside attraction that blended Old-West fantasy with local history. Opened in the 1960s along Churton Street near I-85, it featured a faux frontier town, pioneer-style buildings, a toy museum, craft shops, a railroad caboose, and even a miniature train ride. Though loosely inspired by the legend of Daniel Boone — who really did traverse the region in the 18th century — the village leaned more toward nostalgic Americana than strict historical interpretation. For generations of locals and travelers, it was a place to wander wooden boardwalks, browse country stores, and take in a slice of mid-century roadside culture.
The Daniel Boone Railroad was once the centerpiece attraction of the Wild-West themed amusement site The railroad looped through wooded terrain around the park, and during its heyday it even staged a “train robbery” with costumed actors playing bandits and sheriffs to entertain the passengers.
In later years, as tourism tastes shifted, Daniel Boone Village gradually quieted down and many of the shops and attractions closed or relocated. Rather than being abandoned, though, the property evolved. Businesses like the beloved Hot Tin Roof bar and the whimsical Hillsborough Yarn Shop moved into the old structures, giving the site a second life while preserving its offbeat charm. Today, the area feels like a blend of local hangout and historical relic — a reminder of the era when small towns built roadside theme villages to catch passing drivers’ imaginations. It still holds a special place in Hillsborough’s story, both as a nostalgic landmark and as a quirky example of how communities reinvent themselves over time.
