Ever since I read Elizabeth Keckly’s autobiography I’ve been a huge fan of hers and wanted to display that in hopes of initiating conversations with other fans of the historic icon.
Elizabeth Keckley was a formerly enslaved woman who became a highly respected dressmaker, entrepreneur, and author in the 19th century. Born into slavery in Virginia in 1818, she endured years of hardship before purchasing freedom for herself and her son in 1855. Keckley’s extraordinary talent for dressmaking led her to Washington, D.C., where she quickly gained a reputation among the city’s elite for her skill, professionalism, and refined designs. Her work eventually brought her to the attention of Mary Todd Lincoln, and Keckley became the First Lady’s personal modiste and confidante during Abraham Lincoln’s presidency.
After Lincoln’s assassination, she wrote Behind the Scenes (1868), a memoir offering a rare, firsthand account of life inside the Lincoln household and the emotional struggles of Mary Todd Lincoln. Though controversial at the time for its intimate revelations, the book has since become an invaluable historical document, highlighting Keckley’s voice as both a skilled artist and a thoughtful observer of American life. The book includes her time enslaved at the Burwell School in downtown Hillsborough.
