In July 2025, floodwaters from Tropical Storm Chantal destryoed Hillsborough NC’s cherished bee hotel that served as public art and a home to bees in Gold Park. The storm saddly not only destroyed it but it carried it about a mile down the Eno River. I’m still sad about this… so I made a shirt.
Nestled along the Riverwalk at Gold Park (415 Dimmocks Mill Rd.), the town of Hillsborough installed a prominent bee hotel — a specially designed structure to house solitary native bees and to raise awareness about pollinators. The project stemmed from Hillsborough’s designation as a Bee City USA in 2016, which charged the town with promoting pollinator-friendly practices and building habitats for native bee species.
The bee hotel itself was designed and built by local craftsman and woodworker David Hinkle, combining thoughtful habitat design with artistic flair.
The structure was more than just art—it’s functional. Inside, materials like bamboo tubes, blocks of wood with holes, and other natural cavities provide nesting space for native bees that don’t live in hives but instead in solitary nests. Workshops and public-engagement efforts accompanied its installation, inviting community members to “build their own bee hotels” and helping educate people about how many of these native bees work quietly behind the scenes to pollinate gardens and crops.
