This shirt is inspired by a 1953 auto racing program from the Occaneechee Speedway. Hillsborough’s Occoneechee Speedway has a rich and fascinating past. Originally the grounds of a horse‐racing track on the Occoneechee Farm, which took its name from the indigenous Occaneechi tribe, the site caught the attention of Bill France Sr. (founder of NASCAR) in the late 1940s. He converted it into a 0.9-mile dirt oval in 1947—with races starting soon after. The speedway hosted some of NASCAR’s earliest events, including the 1949 “Strictly Stock” series, making it one of the sport’s foundational venues. Drivers such as Richard Petty, Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson and others raced here before the track closed in 1968.

Today, the Occoneechee Speedway is no longer a roaring racetrack—but its story hasn’t faded. The 44-acre site has been transformed into the Historic Occoneechee Speedway Trail, a public trail loop that lets visitors walk the very clay oval where cars once sped, and explore the remains of grandstands and infrastructure now softened by time and forest. In 2025, the area was officially incorporated into Eno River State Park, ensuring the preservation of this unique melding of natural beauty and motorsports heritage. It’s a quiet, reflective place now—where the ghosts of engines are replaced by birdsong and hikers tracing the tracks of motorsport history. You’ll find me running there most weekends.
